There is a difference between juices and smoothies, although this difference may not be obvious to many people. Both juices and smoothies are drinkable, and both can contain vegetables, fruits and grasses, but that is where their similarities end.

Juices contain only the juice from plant foods. When the foods are put through a vegetable juicer, the juice is extracted and the dry pulp remains behind. Usually this pulp is discarded, but it can be used in quick breads, muffins or soups. You could even put the leftover pulp into a compost pile!

Juicing makes it easier to consume those vegetables that are loaded with nutrition, but that you may not care to eat. For example, many people do not like to eat broccoli or Brussels sprouts; it would be difficult for them to eat a significant amount of those vegetables. However, they could drink the juice of an entire head of broccoli in just a minute or two!

Since juice does not contain any of the plants’ pulp or fiber, it is very quickly absorbed by your digestive system, making the nutrients almost immediately available for quick energy.

Smoothies, on the other hand, are made by blending the whole food into a thick mixture for drinking. Many people include the skin and seeds as well as the flesh of fruits and vegetables. This is a great way to get added nutrition.

The advantage of making smoothies is that the pulp, which is discarded when a juicer is used, is included in the final drink. That pulp contains the plants’ fiber, and fiber is a crucial component of a good diet. When we eat fiber, we are eating something that our bodies cannot completely digest, so it travels through our system somewhat intact. The result is regular bowel movements and improved colon health.

Eating the fiber in smoothies is also more filling than simply drinking juice. Fiber will give you a lasting feeling of fullness, so you will be less tempted to snack. Drinking smoothies is a great way to control your appetite if you are interested in losing weight.

Regardless of which method you choose, consuming large amounts of vegetables and fruits is one of the best things you can do for your health. It is hard to eat the recommended five to nine servings of fruits and vegetable daily, but when some of those servings are turned into delicious drinks, it makes it much easier to obtain the vibrant health that plant foods can give us.

Drinking the same smoothie or juicer combination daily can be boring. So do look for different recipes and make your juice or smoothie preparation and consumption fun and interesting.
